Lyrics

Spanish: El desafío

(Cantado)
Le corro con mi manchao
al alazán de Cirilo
y no le pido ni un kilo
como le dio al colorao...
Nicasio, de abanderao
y como juez don Zenón.
A correr desde el portón
hasta allí, hasta el esquinero...
Y me juego hasta el apero
¡y empeño hasta mi facón!

(Recitado)
¡No respeto, caballeros,
estado, ni pelo, ni marca!
Y al de la estancia ’e “La Zarca”
le pueden bajar los cueros.
No me asustan parejeros
con tapa ni con trompeta...
Pues no es al primer sotreta
que allí, en la esquina ’e Las Latas
le hice revoliar las patas
¡y también largar la jeta...!

(Cantado)
Le aceptan y desensillan
dejando sobre el apero,
botas, facón y sombrero.
Y hace vincha su golilla,
va de la cancha a la orilla
en vez de un rebenque, dos...
Con la fe puesta en su Dios
cual legítima esperanza,
y llegar a la balanza
a igualar sesentaidós...

(Recitado)
Le tocó un rosillo moro
marca de Hilarión Contreras,
que había ganao más carreras
que el colorao sangre ´e toro.
Lo montaba un mozo Floro
muy güen corredor campero,
puntiador y ventajero
pa´ largar a la bandera,
pues no había quién saliera
¡Siempre picaba primero!

(Cantado)
El rival del mocetón
que se sintió desafiar,
cargó, pa’l peso igualar
medio kilo ’e munición.
Lo rodeaban un montón
que hacían juerza pa´ su lao.
Otros, palmiando al manchao,
seguían pa´l andarivel,
como si vieran en él
un triunfo ya descontao.

(Recitado)
¡Y pa´ qué seguir contando
lo que fue aquella carrera!
Si cualquier hombre de afuera
ya lo estará calculando...
Anduvieron mañeriando
errar y errar la partida,
hasta que en una corrida
les bajó el abanderao,
y el rosillo y el manchao
¡jueron una luz prendida!

(Cantado)
Y se sintió ¡Ya pegaron!
y la cosa jué pareja.
Ni se sacaban la oreja
y los rebenques bajaron...
Y cuando al final pasaron
entre público y rayeros,
entre aplausos y sombreros
que se agitaban de gozo,
el juez gritó sentencioso:
“¡Puesta, nomás, caballeros!”

English: The Challenge

(sung)
I race Cirilo’s sorrel
with my spotted horse
and I don’t ask for even one kilo
like he gave the red-haired one…
Nicasio, as flag bearer,
and as judge don Zenón .
To race from the gate
to there, to the lamppost on the corner…
And I bet everything, even the saddle,
and pawn everything down to my knife!

(recited)
I don’t respect, gentlemen,
state, hair or breed!
And the one from the “La Zarca” estate,
you might as well unsaddle it already.
I’m not afraid of racehorses
with secret qualities[1] or with a trumpet…[2]
Because it’s not the first time,
I make the legs of a frisky horse fly round,
there on the corner of “Las Latas”,[3]
and even pull a long face!

(sung)
They all accept and unsaddle
leaving on the harness
boots, knife and hat.
And he turns his neckerchief to a headband,
and goes to the edge of the track,
instead of one riding crop, two…
with the faith placed in his God,
as a legitimate hope,
he gets to the scale
and matches the number sixty-two…

(recited)
He got a blue roan,
branded by Hilarión Contreras,
that had won more races
that the red one with bull’s blood.
A lad, Floro, rode it,
a very good rider of the countryside,
front-runner and fast
to set out when the flag came down,
because no other started sooner,
he always took off first!

(sung)
The youth’s rival
that felt challenged
loaded up, to even the weight,
half a kilo of supplies.
He was surrounded by a bunch
that rooted for him.
Others, patting the spotted one,
followed him to his lane
as if they already saw in it
an assured triumph.

(recited)
And why should I keep telling
how that race went on!
If anyone from the outside
must be calculating it already…
They were fussing for a while
without agreeing on the departure
until at one point
the flag bearer gave the signal
and both the roan and the spotted one
became a burning light!

(sung)
And it was heard: They’ve started!
and the thing was even.
None would get one ear ahead
and the riding crops came down…
And when at the end they passed
through the public and the linesmen
that were shaking with thrill,
the judge dogmatically yelled:
“It’s a tie, gentlemen!”
