Lyrics

Spanish: Soy un porteño

Soy un porteño nacido
en el barrio que se cuadre,
niño bien, medio compadre,
sobrador y consentido.
Tengo fama de aburrido
y ando galgueando la guita,
pero guardo la infinita
nobleza del ser humano
si canto con “Mano a Mano”
o lloro con “La cumparsita."

Me hice una ley: ser derecho
en la mala y en la buena,
silbo y desato la pena
que se hizo nudo en mi pecho.
Guardo en el alma al acecho,
una pasión sin medida,
y sé jugarme la vida
por un naipe y una dama.
¡Si me habrán dejao de cama
naipes, paicas y bebidas!

Me templé en los bodegones
sacando lustre al estaño,
vi hacer callo al desengaño
en corazón de varones.
Pianto de los metejones
que traen al amor fulero,
pero soy bueno y sincero
cuando el amor me echa garra.
¡Yo soy como la guitarra,
canto y lloro cuando quiero!

English: I'm a Porteño

I’m a porteño, born
in the neighbourhood that fits,
well-to-do boy, half compadre,
conceited and spoiled.
I’ve a reputation for being boring
and go around begging for money,
but I keep the infinite
nobility of the humankind
if I sing “Mano a Mano”
or cry to “La cumparsita.”

I’ve made one law for myself: to be honest
through thick and thin.
I whistle and unleash the sorrow
that has tied a knot in my chest.
I keep lurking in my soul
a passion without measure,
and I know how to gamble my life
for a card and a lady.
The times I’ve been left ruined
by cards, women and drinks!

I was tempered in the taverns,
polishing tin,
I’ve seen disillusion make a callus
on many male hearts.
I run away from the crushes
that bring over the nasty kind of love,
but I’m good and sincere
when love takes ahold of me.
I’m like the guitar,
I sing and cry whenever I please!
